Frel Otto - Ελαφριά Κατασκευή


Η ελαφριά κατασκευή όσο μεγάλης κλίμακας και να είναι ανταποκρίνεται στις επιδιώξεις του ανθρώπου για εξέλιξη. Όσο πλησιάζει ο σχεδιασμός στα όρια της οικονομίας της κατασκευής και συνολικά και στα επιμέρους, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει την μονοτονία και την απλοϊκότητα του συνόλου, τόσο πλησιέστερα βρίσκεται στην εκπλήρωση της αποστολής της.
Η υπερβολή μπορεί να εντυπωσιάζει αλλά έχει μικρή ζωή, είναι εφήμερη διαδικασία.
Τα συμμετέχοντα υλικά στην κατασκευή συμβάλλουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό με τις ιδιαιτερότητες τους στην συνολική "αρχιτεκτονική ικανοποίηση". Είναι όμως σωστή η κατεύθυνση του "ψευδούς" υλικού και τί σημαίνει αυτό? Μήπως βρισκόμαστε πλησιέστερα στην ομορφιά και την γνήσια ικανοποίηση όταν τα υλικά χρησιμοποιούνται στην φυσική τους το δυνατόν μορφή και άρα κοντά στην αλήθεια τους?
"Ολα να φαίνονται όπως είναι".
"Το ξύλο να είναι ξύλο και το μέταλλο μέταλλο".
Η κατασκευή δεν είναι μια ψυχρή διαδικασία σύνθεσης υλικών και μηχανικών - δυναμικών κανόνων. Η κατασκευή είναι ο συνδετικός κρίκος ανάμεσα στην Λειτουργία και την Αισθητική αντικειμένων μικρής και μεγάλης κλίμακας.

Η ελαφριά κατασκευή είναι η επιθυμία του ανθρώπου να ξεπεραστούν οι δυσκολίες προς το πνευματικότερο.

Werner Herzog - Letzte Worte (1968)



During the making of Signs of Life, Herzog also shot the experimental short Letzte Worte (Last Words, 1968), about a hermit who is brought back to civilisation, where he refuses to speak; meanwhile, other members of society obsessively repeat themselves to the point of nonsense. This film would mark the start of Herzog's investigation into human language, and his continued steps toward increasing narrative stylisation.

Lyttelton on a day in 1882









Lyttelton on March 24th, 1882: twenty-four overseas sailing vessels in the inner harbour.

A valuable link with the past has been presented to the Seamen's institute by Mr J. B. Milsom, of Kaikoura, and a former Mayor of Lyttelton. The gift is a panoramic photograph of Lyttelton Harbour, taken from the Corsair Bay road on March 24th, 1882, when there were no fewer than twenty-four overseas sailing vessels in the inner harbour. All are berthed except one, which is moored in the western part of the basin. The total tonnage of overseas vessels is 27,752 tons, and there are ten vessels at the Gladstone Pier and Breastwork. The names of all the vessels are given, as follows: - Carnavon Castle, 729 tons; Midlothian, 1085 tons; Pet, 266 tons; Lurline, 761 tons; Guy Mannering, 807 tons; Ione, 520 tons; Mataura, 853 tons; Wigtonshire, 899 tons; Duncraig, 699 tons; Duchess of Argyle, 1699 tons; Euterpe, 1197 tons; City of Perth, 1189 tons; Inch Murren, 2254 tons; Cairnbulg, 1567 tons; British Yeoman, 1898 tons; Glamis, 1150 tons; Seriol Wyn, 1065 tons; Roman Empire, 1545 tons; Alexra, 1425 tons; Glenburn, 1476 tons; Gairloch, 1177 tons; Loch Dee, 700 tons; Brilliant, 1613 tons; and Woollahra, 942 tons. The last-named was wrecked at Tongue Point, near Cape Terawhiti, while en route from Wellington to Kaipara in ballast. The Brilliant, owned by Duthie's, was a fast sailer, and in 1877 had made the passage from Plymouth to Sydney in 79 days. She was sold to the Italians in 1905, and broken up at Genoa a few years later. The Cairnbulg, also owned by Duthie Bros., after being sold first to the Russians, and then to the Norwegians, who renamed her Alexandra, met with an unusual end. Leaving New Castle, New South Wales, in November, 1907, for Panama, she was abandoned 500 miles off the South American Coast in the following May, in calm weather, solely owing to provisions having run out. Her remains were found later on the rocks at Iguana Cove, Albemarle Island. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Mataura was, at the time the photograph was taken, loading the first cargo of frozen meat from New Zealand, to be landed in England, where she arrived on September 26th. She ended her career in 1900 as the "Alida", under the Norwegian flag, being dismasted in the Pacific and abandoned. The Euterpe, then flying the Shaw, Savill flag, is believed to be still afloat in Canadian waters, under the name of "Star of India". The City of Perth, already famous for some fast passages, was later better known as The New Zealand Shipping Company's Turakina. Soon after the photograph was taken she went to Timaru and loaded wheat for Home, but while at anchor at Timaru a gale arose, and she was blown ashore. She was successfully refloated, and sold for £500 to the New Zealand Shipping Company, for whom she made many fast passages, notably one from Wellington to the Lizard in 69 days, and on one occasion she raced and beat the Company?s mail steamer Ruapehu. Sold to the Norwegians, she is probably still afloat under the name of Elida.

Theo,

I have been working very hard lately, and am busy from morning till night. First, the little drawings for C.M. They are finished, and I have sent them to him 1. I had hoped he would pay me at once, and since he has not, I am afraid he will forget it, and when will he send it now??? I continue to make such little views of the city almost every day, and have the knack now.

I wish Tersteeg or others who pretend to be friendly or to want to help me would ask for things that I can make, instead of asking for impossible things which discourage instead of encourage me. Enfin, que soit. But I had expected C.M. to pay me at once. The drawings were certainly no worse than the specimen which he saw, and I had trouble enough making them, perhaps more than 30 guilders' worth. If people understood that nothing is nothing, and that days without a penny in my pocket are very hard and difficult, I think they would not begrudge me the little money I get from you which keeps me afloat in these hard times, not unnerve me by reproaches for taking it from you.

Don't I deserve my bread if I work hard? Or am I not worthy of the means which enable me to work? I only wish, brother, that you would come here soon and see for yourself whether I'm cheating you or not.

Blommers spoke to me about showing a collection of wood engravings after Herkomer, Frank Holl, du Maurier, etc., some evening at Pulchri. I should like very much to do so. I have enough of them for at least two evenings.

Well, I'm getting on all right and feel that I am making progress. I must go on drawing for a year or at least a few months more until my hand has become quite firm, and my eye steady; and then I don't see any obstacle to my becoming quite productive in things that will sell. It is only reasonable for me to want these few months' time. I cannot go quicker than that, for I should produce bad work, and that isn't necessary: with a little patience my work can be good.

Can you send me some money soon? I hope so. You know I sent the 10 guilders back to Tersteeg.
I wish you would become a painter; you can if you want to, and you wouldn't lose by it—you would only become something better than if you remained an art dealer, even if you were the best of all art dealers. But you'll have to plunge into it with all your strength to bring out the best that's in you.

I haven't sent you any little sketches recently, I'm waiting until you come to see them for yourself—that's better. I am busy drawing some figures and also a few landscapes, for instance a nursery here on Schenkweg.

I should like to know since when they can force or try to force an artist to change either his technique or his point of view. I think it very impertinent to attempt such a thing, especially for a man like Tersteeg, who pretends to stand on “good form.” Theo, if you can send me some money, do, the sooner you send it, the sooner I shall be relieved of the worry.

Η υγεία έγινε αντικείμενο κατανάλωσης ή ακόμα και δικαίωμα πρός διεκδίκηση, έγινε αρχή που διέπει την ύπαρξη μας και κατ'αυτόν τον τρόπο επιτρέπει την απεριόριστη εξάπλωση της ιατρικής εξουσίας.>>
